Church Structure

The United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ was duly constituted on June 25, 1957 by the regularly chosen representatives of the Congregational Christian Churches and of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, in a Uniting General Synod held in Cleveland, Ohio. The creation of the UCC brought together these four unique traditions from the rich and diverse history of Christian experience.

Our Local Background

On January 1, 1825, at a cost of $325.75, the Castile Grange Hall, which was located on West Mill Street in Castile, was purchased as our first church home.

On September 22, 1834, a Presbyterian Church was formed in Castile. The church wanted to operate in a  congregational manner, but the Prebytery refused the request. As a result, from 1835 to 1870, they called themselves Congregational, but they did not report to the Presbytery each year.

In 1837, the Colonial Church was built, but burned down in 1893. Nine months later, a new church was erected. Our present church stands on the site of the Colonial Church. In December 1960, the church became affiliated with the United Church of Christ

Our Church Covenant

We covenant and bind ourselves to strive to know the will of God, and to walk in the ways of the Lord made known to us by: to exalt the worship of the one true God, and to proclaim the Gospel to all mankind. To work and pray for progress and knowledge, the promotion of justice, the reign of peace, and the realization of human brotherhood. Amen.
